Chapter 8

Mason

The heavy door of the fire station slams shut behind me as I step into the crisp evening air, my muscles aching after a grueling twenty-four-hour shift. The exhaustion weighs on me, but I can't help feeling excited to return home and see Abby. She's been a beacon of light in my life ever since she came to stay with me, and I'm drawn to her like a moth to a flame.

And don't even get me started on Maya. That little girl is as precious to me as if she were my own baby.

The drive home is an anxious blur, anticipation pumping through my veins. There's something about Abby that makes everything else fade away. The long hours, the danger, the feeling that I don't have anything worth really living for... It all evaporates when she's near.

As I pull up to my house, I notice the warm glow of the lights inside, and I smile, knowing Abby is waiting for me beyond that door. My footsteps feel lighter as I make my way up the path and unlock the door, eager to be reunited with her.

"Abby?" I call out, stepping into the cozy warmth of the living room. There she is, her wavy brown hair cascading down her back as she's busy setting the table. Her gentle smile greets me, instantly melting away the fatigue from my long shift.

"Hey," she says as I walk over to her and give her a quick peck on the cheek. It throws her off for a second, but she recovers like a champ. If she can dole out cheek kisses, so can I, though I'd like to kiss her elsewhere. "Your mom brought dinner," she says. "But I made dessert. It's not much. Just brownies, but I wanted to contribute."

"You didn't have to do that."

"Consider it a small token of my appreciation for everything you've done for us," she replies, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. As we sit down to eat, I'm reminded once again of how lucky I am to have Abby in my life – even if it might only be temporary.

I hope it isn't.

My fork hovers over the baked steak and mashed potatoes, but I can't shake the nagging feeling that something is bothering Abby. Her smile doesn't quite reach her eyes, and there's a shadow of worry lingering behind them. All I want to do is protect her from whatever troubles her, but first, I need to know what it is.

"Is everything okay?"

"Everything's fine," she replies quickly, her eyes flickering away from mine.

"Talk to me.”

She hesitates, and I can practically see the battle waging inside her head as she decides whether or not to confide in me. Finally, with a quiet sigh, she relents.

"I talked to my mom today," she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Your mom?" I ask, surprised. As far as I know, they haven't been in touch since Abby learned of her pregnancy.

"Yeah," she nods, taking a deep breath. "After your mom stopped by earlier today, I called her.
